Myth Functions As A Source Of Expression In Our Lives,

Myth functions as a source of expression in our lives, whether it be value, worldview or even how our very own gender roles are impacted. Myth can allow particular behavior in response to how we perceive and deal with the myth itself. If we accept the myth, we could potentially use it to cope with life in general. Though fiction, myth gives our lives this sense of an exterior, or hidden human life that is capable of giving our lives more meaning. Often times, and in the case for this paper, a sense of feminism, the symbolism of the woman warrior speaks as the theme of myth. To first compare this sense of myth into the reality of our daily lives, I’d like to first look at Joseph Campbell’s theory in which signififies this expression of†¦show more content†¦Or perhaps, consider the passage here, where Campbell makes it aware that from our dreams, we can begin to learn about ourselves, â€Å" For example, you may be worried about whether you are going to pass an exam. Then you have a dream of some kind of failure, and you find that failure will be associated with many other failures in your life. They are all piled up together there. Freud says even the most fully expounded dream is not really fully expounded. The dream is an inexhaustible source of spiritual information about yourself. Now the level of dream of â€Å"will I pass the exam?† or â€Å"Should I marry this girl?†- that is purely personal. But, on another level, the problem f passing an exam is not simply a personal problem. Everyone has to pass a threshold of some kind. That is an archetypal thing. So there is a basic mythological theme there even though it is a personal dream. These two levels –the personal aspect and then the big general problem of which the person’s problem is a local example-are found in all cultures. For example, everyone has the problem of facing death. This is a standard mystery.† From this passage, Campbell gets a bit technical and personal on a different level than we would suggest when we think of mythology. But I enjoy his perspective, how we are so intertwined with our dreams and how our memories can identify us in such a way that we are thrown off of reality.
