The interview life

The interview life I know I just wrote an entry about grad school interviews, but my mood has done a total 180 since then, so I feel Im justified in talking a little more about the process that is consuming my life. Grad school interviewing in biology gives some insight into the admissions process, which is quite a bit different at the grad level than at the undergrad level. So if you come to MIT (or any other top undergrad school), youll talk to your fellow students and find that their acceptances and rejections dont seem to fit a pattern one person was accepted at School A but rejected at School B, while another person has a completely opposite history. Since there are so many people applying for so few undergrad spots, the process can seem sort of random. Its not like that interviewing for grad programs. Everybody applies to basically the same set of schools (with some variation due to personal preference), and all the same people interview at and get into the various schools. If you get interviews at School A and School B, you can be pretty well assured youll get an interview at School C. This obviously creates a cohesive little community of people who are going around interviewing at all the top programs; Ive met so many great people on my interview trips, and some of them have become my friends. There are, incidentally, a lot of current MIT undergrads at these interview weekends there were 8 or 9 of us out of 75 recruits at UC Berkeley last weekend, and there are more than that here at Stanford this weekend. Ive also run into several current Stanford and Berkeley grad students who did their undergrad work at MIT and are all too happy to find out the current state of the Institvte. (They all say hi.) Im also working hard to recruit my fellow interviewees who were accepted to the MIT biology grad program. Just today, I was talking with a guy whos seriously considering MIT I was singing the praises of the T and talking trash about northern California weather. (65 degrees year-round? Seriously? But when do you get to wear tank tops and skirts?) So if you come to MIT next year or in the next few years, your TA might be at MIT because I sweet-talked him or her into attending! :D EDIT, Friday afternoon: I walked into one of my interviews today. The professor shook my hand and said (I am not even making this up), I saw in your folder that you went to MIT. MIT applicants, as far as Im concerned, are automatic admits to this program. He was apparently an undergrad at MIT back in the 70s, so we proceeded to have a lovely chat about MIT housing, MIT student culture, and MITs new president. He says hi too. Questions, cause I havent answered any recently: 1. Phil asked, Is it really possible to come with an almost clean mind about a subject (not much prior knowledge) and major in it. I know its nice to think that you can do anything you want at MIT, but is it really feasible? I would tend to say that yes, its possible. I came to MIT thinking I was going to choose the cognitive science track in the brain and cognitive sciences major, and ended up doing the molecular/cellular track, even though I had very little knowledge of what it entailed prior to MIT. And to some degree, youre never going to understand anything science or engineering-related well enough in high school to really understand what youre getting yourself into. My one warning is that, in order to come to MIT, youd better be fairly well sure that youd be happy majoring in science, engineering, or business. 2. Alex asked I am just finishing high school and a 3 year research internship where I did a modest body of original research. I plan on getting into UROP as soon as I get on a college campus and definetely this summer. However, the resume I have is formatted for colleges and scholarhships, and my previous internship was attained through an advisor. What tips can you give me on preparing a resume/CV for sending to professors/researchers? Can you send/post me an example? Thanks The resume that got my my UROP is here (minus my name and address information, which would usually go at the top). Its not amazing, but it did the job. If you fish around that directory, you can also find my current CV, which is considerably less cheesy. You should also write a short cover letter/email to the PI, explaining why his/her research caught your eye and what you have to offer as a UROP. Dont be afraid to sell yourself, although you should be sure to be only as full of yourself as your previous experience will allow. 3. M asked, Can you share some of your thoughts about whats hot and whats not about grad programs in Bio at the institutions which you have been interviewed? Thanks a lot. UCLA Hot: Weather, literally. Not: Program quality top 25 program, but not top 5. UCSF Hot: Faculty and grad students seem to be best buddies. No undergrads. Beautiful new Mission Bay campus. Not: Not many faculty Id like to work with (lots of structural biologists), and institutional culture is not a good fit for me. MIT Hot: Cares the most about their grad students. Super faculty. Great first-year program. Not: Its better for your career if you go elsewhere, couldnt do neurobiology (since you have to switch labs from your UROP) Berkeley Hot: Some faculty doing amazing stuff! Not: Program and individual labs are really big. Surrounding area is a little sketchy. Stanford Hot: Again, faculty doing amazing stuff. Lots of cellular neurobiologists. Not: Funding is only guaranteed for 4 years, but it takes 5.8 on average to get your PhD. Harvard Havent been there yet. 6. Christina asked, Do you feel like you have an allegiance to MIT? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Im still very seriously considering the MIT graduate program, but I have to remember that a) I cant expect to recreate my undergraduate experience in a graduate program, and b) I have to pick the program on its own merits, not on the fact that my love for MIT has blinded me to any of its faults. Since 1492, the year in which Christopher Columbus discovered the New World, the â€Å"Native Americans†, or â€Å"American Indians†, the original inhabitants of these newfound lands, became a source of dispute and conflict. The terminology of the word ‘Indian’ suggests the cultural and racial unity of all indigenous people, but it was not an idea shared by them. On the contrary, a huge variety of languages, traditions, cultures, lifestyles, existed among the indigenous populations, and had done so for thousands of years. In 1871, John Maynard Woodward was appointed the Supervising Surgeon of the Marine Hospital Service. In 1879, yellow fever spread up the Mississippi Valley beginning in New Orleans, the devastation this caused lead to the creation of the National Board of Health. The National Board of Health tried to regulate quarantine laws between the states; this caused discontent with the states, as quarantine laws were valuable financially and politically. In 1883, the National Board of Health was terminated and the board powers went back to the Marine Hospital Service. â€Å"In 1912, the Marine Hospital Service became the United States Public Health Service, specifically authorized to investigate the causes and spread of disease and to provide health information to the public† (Scutchfield Keck, 2009, p.15). Between the 1930s and 1944 the United States Public Health Services added engineers, dentists, research scientists, nurses, and other health care specialists to their arsenal. The United States Public Health Service continues today as the U. S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps with the mission of protecting and promoting the public health of the Nation and globally to prevent disease, sickness, and suffering (U. S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, 2011). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) operates under the Department of Health and Human Services. Beginning July 1, 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center the initial focus was controlling Malaria in war areas. The last six decades have seen the CDC grow and include more responsibility to its program. â€Å"Today, CDC is the nation’s premier health promotion, prevention, and preparedness agency and a global leader in public health† (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). The CDC’s mission â€Å"is to collaborate to create the expertise, information, and tools that people and communities need to protect their health – through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury and disability, and preparedness for new health threats† (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). The CDC collaborates with the states and health care administration around the country and abroad to maintain a surveillance system to thwart disease occurrences. County, State, and National Public Health Resources The goal of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services is to provide protection of citizen’s health, and to provide services to the needy. Separate agencies focus care on individual needs, such as wellness (family planning, child health, newborn services), safety (abuse neglect, domestic violence, food protection), disease education (asthma, diabetes, HIV, hepatitis), and support services (behavioral health, childcare, child support, Medicaid). â€Å"The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (NH DHHS) is the largest agency in New Hampshire state government, responsible for the health, safety, and well being of the citizens of New Hampshire† (NH DHHS, 2011). New Hampshire DHHS provides services to individuals, children, families, and seniors with programs and services for residents with mental health, developmental disability, substance abuse, and public health. Each county has one or two offices. The Food Stamp Program helps residents meet nutritional needs by providing benefits to buy food at local grocery stores. Food Stamp benefits cover items like milk, meat, fish, eggs, rice, pasta, and infant formula. The Division of Child Support Services provides support to ensure every child in NH has financial and medical support from both parents. The Governor’s Commission on Disability assists residents who cannot continue working through providing resources from Social Security and Medicare or Medicaid. The Bureau of Behavioral health promotes â€Å"respect, recovery, and full community inclusion for adults, including older adults, who experience a mental illness and children with an emotional disturbance† (NH DHHS, 2011). Public Health Public health nurses focus care on â€Å"the community or population as a whole; raising questions about its overall health status, and associated factors† (Stanhope Lancaster, 2008, p. 14). Public health nurses come from a wide variety of specialties or may be credentialed in public health specifically. Some of the programs public health nurses focus on includes obesity, emergency preparedness, and chemical exposure prevention. Public health nurses work in schools, the workplace, and local government. Community Health Community health is â€Å"the synthesis of nursing theory and public health theory applied to promoting, preserving, and maintaining the health of populations through the delivery of personal health care services to individuals and groups† (Stanhope Lancaster, 2008, p. 16). These nurses work in government and private agencies focusing on improving the health of the communities. They provide education about health and disease prevention, nutrition, and childcare. Community health nurses work closely with health care organizations. An example of community health nursing is nurses who work for Community Health Centers or Parish nurses. Conclusion Public and Community Health Associations have improved and extended the quality of life of American citizens since their inception during the 1800s. In 1961, Stanley Milgram, a psychologist at Yale University, conducted an experiment on a group’s obedience to authority. This experiment has encountered intense scrutiny ever since its findings were first published in 1963; many people question the ethics and validity of the experiment. Multitudes of researchers have taken it upon themselves to determine the answers to the questions (McLeod). Based on new guidelines for ethics, Stanley Milgram’s experiment on the obedience to authority was neither ethical nor valid. Milgram believed that for the experiment to be authentic, deception was inevitable. He also sent out a questionnaire to his participants afterwards to see the effectiveness of the deception. Some of the participants also displayed physical signs of distress, but Milgram stated the symptoms were short term and the participants were better after they had been debriefed about the experiment (McLeod). If people change their actions because they are a part of an experiment, then Milgram could not have reasonably inferred that people would obey the authority figure no matter the cost (Mook, pages 385-386)? The participants could also have realized they were being tricked and could have just played along with the experiment (Orne and Holland). Because internal validity is maintained, some believe Milgram’s experiment is valid. The ability of the test to be replicated accomplishes some internal validity. The setting and the factors tested could easily be tested again by another researcher (Samson, page 8). The questionnaire used by Milgram can also be used to support the experiment’s validity. Considering the participants truly thought that they were tricked, the results of the experiment would not have been tampered with (McLeod). Since Milgram’s experiment is only able to pass one sector of the three sectors of validity, the results of the experiment are not valid. Milgram was unable to test all of the factors of the experiment. He did not allow people to quit the experiment until the fifth time they ask. This act can lead to people believing they have no way out of the experiment. The experiment is biased in that it only has male participants, and Milgram hand selected them (McLeod). Although the experiment can be replicated obtaining internal validity, it is impossible to tell if these are the correct results because Milgram only tested a few factors. This experiment is ultimately unable to be tested because of all the factors that must go into it. No experiment could be produced to accurately test the obedience to authority while maintaining an ethical nature and validity. Milgram’s experiment has faced years of questions of whether it is ethical or valid. The deception and psychological harm in the experiment questions its ethics; the lack of external and environmental validity questions its validity. Although Milgram did maintain internal validity in the experiment, and most of the participants were glad they participated, the experiment in the end was neither ethical nor valid.

He claims that we all crave for the worst, and at times this seems to be a scary truth. Although they may at first seem different, both authors are actually talking in contrast about the same thing. Fear is present in us in two forms: fear of the unknown, which King indulges in his writings, and the fear, which always lives within you whether good or bad as Walker writes about. When we prefer to be afraid, it is always because we wish not to be responsible for our actions. The use of the phrase tow the line is a common mistake; what the paper should have written was toe the line. To toe the line means to conform to some rule or standard, to fall into line. Politicians, for example, often have to toe their party lines. People may imagine that the spelling tow the line is correct as it perhaps derives from some nautical activity. Ropes are often called lines aboard ship and a tow-line is just a line used to tow something on the water. But the phrase is probably nothing to do with ropes. In fact, the exact source is unclear but the phrase is generally taken to derive from the idea of lining up for a sporting activity, i.e. to place your toe on the line for the start of a race. By doing so you are following the rules set out for the activity. There are other theories as to the origins of the phrase. It may derive from boxing, with early prize-fighters having to stand with one foot on a scratched line on the ground to fight. Others have claimed that it derives from the British House of Commons, where lines are marked on the ground to prevent more adversarial debates from getting out of hand.
